Andrew Shelling
Dr Andrew Shelling is a Senior Lecturer in Reproductive Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is head of the Medical Genetics Research Group, which is primarily interested in understanding the molecular changes that occur during the development of genetic disorders, including cancer. The aim of his research is to provide a better understanding of the important changes during the development of disease, which will eventually provide an opportunity to improve the early detection of disease, and to target more effective treatment.
Dr Andrew Shelling is the leader of Objective 2 of the Nutrigenomics Programme. This objective represents the genomics aspect to the overall programme, and will identify molecular changes in genes that determine health and disease, and will determine how nutrition influences the specific genetic changes. As a result of this work, it will be possible to understand how individual food components affect health at the molecular genetic level. The initial disease under investigation is the Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disorder.
