The intestine is a highly complex environment, involving interactions between the host, intestinal bacteria, and foods.
Animal models are necessary to better understand this complex system. Nutrigenomics New Zealand has expertise in testing foods in animal models of IBD and identifying changes in expression levels of key genes and proteins and pathways.
We are using mouse models of IBD to test foods, identify those which can reduce inflammation, and understand the mechanisms through which these foods act.
Foods identified using animal models may be relevant for improving the intestinal health of people with poor intestinal function, such as in IBD.
