Human intervention studies

The definitive way to test the efficacy of a new food or dietary regime is through a human clinical trial.

Metabolomics can be used to:

  • Stratify trial participants, e.g. according to vitamin D phenotype
  • Assess trial compliance
  • Measure the efficacy of the trial, e.g. a shift in inflammatory markers

Transcriptomics can be used to:

  • Show a shift in gene expression before and after the intervention

Proteomics can be used to:

  • Demonstrate the products of those changes in gene expression

Bioinformatics is necessary to

  • Integrate the wide range of data produced
